Spotlight: Birdie's
For the eagle-eyed among you, Birdies Slippers may ring a bell. They were spotted on the feet of Meghan Markle, credited by the brand as one of the original “Birdies,” and have sparked somewhat of a renaissance among the fashion and comfort conscious. The concept is very simple – stylishly designed, chic flats that can pass as house slippers or outdoor footwear, offering the support and comfort of a pair of slippers.
How this is achieved is a marvellous feat of sartorial engineering. The company’s founders, Marisa Sharkey and Bianca Gates, explain that the “sole purpose was to create a luxurious slipper that’s comfortable yet chic and liberates you from socks, bare feet or even worse…ugly frumpy slippers.” Your pair of Birdies will give you “the support of a sneaker with the softness of a slipper and the style of a designer flat.”
In fact, having purchased my first pair of Birdies, I was astonished that no-one had come up with a Birdie before! It sounds obvious if you think about it, but a shoe that meets a Birdie’s requirements, offers every style conscious maven a chance to put their best foot forward without sacrificing that most elusive of elements in women’s footwear, comfort.
The Birdie level of comfort is achieved using cushion technology which comprises elevating arch support, pressure reducing heel cookie, and a no-slip rubber sole for inside traction and outside wearability.
But that’s not to forget that each slipper has been carefully designed with meticulous luxury in mind. That much sought-after comfort is created using the brand’s Signature Champagne Satin Quilting, expressive embellishments, the finest fabrics and a little something extra on each pair.
I bought The Blackbird pair in a size 8.5. Described as a classic smoking slipper, this is easily the most comfortable pair of slippers I have ever owned, (and I’ve owned A LOT of slippers). I wear mine around the house as the perfect casual slipper for pottering around in and leave them on when I head outside because they’re just so easy to dress up or down. You can go casual with jeans and a jacket or dress them up with smart trousers or a dress.
They are a tiny bit pricey for a pair of slippers, but I find the comfort factor too irresistible to pass up, and I imagine the longevity of my Birdies will stand the test of time. All in all, a very worthwhile investment.
